At the heart of the thriving early industrial community known as Rittenhouse Town, the first paper mill in America was built. It all began when, in 1687, papermaker William Rittenhouse followed other Quaker and Mennonite families emigrating to the newly formed neighborhood of Germantown (founded in 1683). William partnered with Philadelphia’s first printer, purchased a 20-acre plot of land along Paper Mill Run (a tributary of the Wissahickon Creek) and, with the help of his son Nicholas, built the first paper mill in British North America that otherwise could only be delivered from England. For the next 40 years, the Rittenhouse family were the only papermakers in America.

Glen Foerd is a one-of-a-kind waterfront venue, just 20 minutes from downtown Philadelphia. The stunning Riverside Pavilion is fully customizable and great for up to 300 guests. Smaller events can be held inside the historic mansion, with its unique second floor art gallery and furnished rooms - it's sophisticated and grand but feels warm and comfortable. The bridal suite is full of natural light, perfect for photographs. There are so many indoor and outdoor options on the property - transition from a riverside ceremony to cocktails on the stone terrace to dinner & dancing in the Riverside Pavilion. Greenbank is a beautiful setting for your DIY event, with historic charm and a natural outdoor setting by the Red Clay Creek. You’ll want to plan hours before and after your event for setup/decorating and cleanup. You can choose to rent in smaller blocks of time using our Standard Package or take advantage of our Wedding Package: it provides access to the site across two days to allow for stress-free setup, deliveries, rehearsals, photographs, and event preparations, plus cleaning services and other special accommodations.
