About this venue

The German Society of Pennsylvania is a historic, three-story brick building with a classic Colonial touch, and is an elegant setting for a Philadelphia wedding. The property offers several venues for every stage of your celebration. The Joseph Horner Memorial Library offers a unique space, with two stories and galleried bookcases. The antique furniture and wood paneling will evoke Belle’s library. The Auditorium, with its distinctly Colonial architecture, is an elegant ceremony venue, but is also perfect for a reception, with plenty of space for dining and dancing. For your cocktail hour, celebrate with your guests in the Ratskeller, a cozy dining room with a tavern atmosphere, or on the spacious and shady Leidy Terrace.

Joseph Horner Memorial Library

A beautiful historic library

The historic Library on the third floor was constructed in 1888 as a reading room. The two-story room is lined with galleried bookcases and a number of busts of famous Germans and German-Americans. There is a large podium at the front of the room and an assortment of antique wooden tables and chairs are available for use. The room is also air-conditioned. For the preservation of our historic collection, foodand beverages are prohibited in the library.

Ratskeller

Cozy German-style Bar

The German Society's Ratskeller is a cozy dining room with a traditional, old-world ambiance. The room includes wooden tables and chairs that can seat up to 45. Larger tables and chairs may be brought in to seat up to 80. The room comes with an attached kitchen with refrigerator, oven, microwave, and industrial dishwasher, as well as a 26' wet bar with two refrigeration units and 8 bar stools.

Leidy Terrace

A spacious and shady patio

The Leidy Terrace was recently renovated, providing a serene outdoor garden space in the center of Philadelphia. Today, it makes the perfect venue for an outdoor garden party, cocktail hour, or ceremony. The Leidy Terrace is wheelchair accessible with natural shade provided by six large Linden trees. Rental of the Terrace includes a commercial grade catering kitchen. Outdoor furniture is not provided by the society and must be rented if desired.

Barthelmes Auditorium

Elegant Ballroom

The Auditorium is a perfect setting for large dinners or parties, corporate events, and wedding receptions. The ballroom has a 13' wet bar near the main entrance with refrigeration units. Rental of the room also includes the use of 19 rectangular folding tables, 14 round tables, and 240 folding chairs, as well as a commercial-grade kitchen and a catering prep room.
