In 1929, Jean-Pierre Auguste Dalmas, a Waldensian immigrant from Villar Pellice, Italy, started construction on the dairy barn on his property in Valdese, NC. After the barn had been completed, work began on the main house. He built a rock veneered masterpiece, large enough to house his 7 children. He cleared a field for a vineyard and until his death in 1972 (at the age of 92), he made wine in the basement of the main house every autumn.

The Murray’s Mill Historic District, in the rolling countryside of eastern Catawba County, nestles just as it was a century ago along the banks of Balls Creek. Preserved intact are the 1913 mill itself, the 1890s Murray & Minges General Store, the 1880s Wheathouse, used as an exhibit gallery, the 1913 John Murray House, furnished to the period, and numerous outbuildings. Run by three generations of the Murray Family who closed operations in 1967, the picturesque structures and surrounding land form the last milling complex in the county, meticulously preserved and interpreted by the Catawba County Historical Association since 1980.

We are a small to medium sized barn venue. The authentic circa 1950 cattle barn and reception pavilion have been renovated into a useable, rustic, yet charming facility for weddings, vow renewals, showers, retirement parties, anniversary parties, etc. We opened in 2017 and have received Cleveland County’s Best of the Best Wedding Venue Award from the Shelby Star each year since that time. We have three ceremony sites to choose from: inside the barn, on the front lawn of the barn (weather permitting), and on the lawn slightly south of the barn (weather permitting). We also have had ceremonies inside the reception pavilion. The panoramic view from the reception pavilion deck is a favorite spot for photos and gatherings. This area overlooks the firepit, as well as the highly photographed views of the gorgeous sunsets.

Initially, the 62-acre Het Landhuis Estate was part of a 1,000-acre farm owned by the Henderson family who operated a tanyard in the area, making saddles and other leather items. One day a future bride drove past Het Landhuis; she stopped in the main driveway and asked if she could get married there. That conversation changed the course of the estate, and Het Landhuis had its Grand Opening in 2010. Heist opened its doors in 2012, as Charlotte's only Craft Brewpub. Originally brewing on a 10HL German brewhouse, we expanded in 2017, adding 30 barrel production facility. Our original focus was on small-batch beer in the traditional Belgian and German style brews. In 2016, we found our stride, creating the original hazy IPA in North Carolina, CitraQuench'l. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to expand our portfolio, now ranging from hazy IPAs and pilsners to fruited sours and adjuncted stouts. We still make the occasional small batches, which are typically kept in house for pours at both our locations.
