My first foray into photography was with the press, but as the digital era arrived I felt I was not being aware of what was happening around, always looking at the camera. Having picked up film photography early in life and motivated by the polarities of interaction, I came to wedding photography with a desire to probe the limits of my couples and their families honest feelings.

27 years ago I called myself a photographer for the first time. I was attending photography school in Sweden and participated in my first gallery show. 2 years earlier I was visiting a friend in LA. I had him chase seagulls on the beach while I snapped away, capturing their flight. I remember that moment I decided to become a photographer. For real. I was discouraged by a job coach after high school, intending a photography eduction. “There are no jobs for photographers!” she barked at me. I took her word for it. I remembered reading an article about the same school, ICP. It had felt like a dream that could never happen to me.

Amir Hamja is a freelance documentary and street photographer from Chittagong, Bangladesh. Influenced by cinematography he started photography at the end of 2013, when he was a student of Pharmaceutical Science. He completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy from University of Science and Technology Chittagong. His photographs have been published in leading newspapers, magazines and internet sites around the world.
