Averie is a photographer based in the NYC area. Born and raised in Sydney Australia, Averie attended The University of New South Wales, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Photomedia in 2011. Since then, Averie has had the pleasure to explore and work in many facets of photography & film, from music & celebrity portraiture, to advertising and fashion. Averie’s style is defined for her love of film photography and subtle use of natural light – giving her work a bold but gentle, raw feeling. When I'm not shooting weddings, I’m a total beach bum. This might sound like an oxymoron coming from a native Montrealer, but I adore the ocean (and very much dislike winter). I swim and surf whenever possible, and I get out to the Rockaways as often as I can. I do a ton of beach photography, including a series about couples at the beach, and I’ve been published a few times, including here and here. If you see me at the beach, come say hi, and let’s have a frozen drink together.

I found my passion for art while growing up surrounded by horses in a small town in Brazil. The shapes, textures, and colors of the horses always have been inspiring to me. I’ve always wanted to recreate them, but was never really able to. Honestly, my painting/drawing skills were and still are terrible, and that’s when photography came up in my life. I would create imaginary cameras out of my toys and would ‘photograph’ the horses and my neighbors. Photographing people became my passion and then evolved into my work in editorial and wedding photography.

As my Instagram bio says, I'm a country girl by birth, a city girl by choice and a photographer by obsession. I grew up on a farm in a small Midwestern town, but have lived in New York City for over 25 years. As a photographer I say I'm self-taught, but in reality I've had the benefit of amazing mentors and teachers along the way who helped me elevate my work and pursue joy along with results. When not making photos or hanging out with my husband and kids, you can find me with a book in hand or listening to music while indulging my love of textiles at my sewing machine (yes, I really own a sewing machine)! Oh, or dancing! :-)

But being a mom has made me appreciate photography the most — I know how fleeting time is and how important it is to have printed memories of those you love dearly.
