All proceeds from this rental are used to support the department's operations. The Athenaeum is a beautifully preserved antebellum building, now serving as an art gallery. One of only two remaining examples of Neoclassical Greek Revival architecture in Alexandria, its exterior features an impressive portico supported by soaring Doric columns. Oversized windows bring natural light to the main gallery rooms, which boast 24-foot ceilings, wonderful woodwork, and exposed granite walls lined with rotating art exhibits. Your ceremony can be held in the sweet, private courtyard. This quaint, romantic space has a “secret garden” feel, sheltered from the street by high, vine-covered red brick walls. The Home and Farm have been passed down through 8 generations of the Miller family. In 1827, John Miller Sr. purchased the land from Francis Thornton and built a modest family home with his son, “Poplar John”. The simple rectangular structure was built from bricks fired on the bank of the Thornton River and trees harvested from nearby Turkey Mountain. Sixty years later, John Byron made substantial additions including the present-day Owner’s Suite, Queen’s Room, and sitting porches.

There is a special sort of feeling that being here at the farm brings, a calm and peaceful energy about the property. Maybe it is the history, there is comfort in knowing the original farmhouse, which sits at the center of the property, has stood for over two centuries. The Wharf Dockmaster Building is located at the end of District Pier and your rental includes the space on the pier around it. Our inside capacity is typically 100 seated dinner style or 140-150 standing cocktail style.

In 1970, we acquired the red brick Quaker House, Carriage House and garden at 2121 Decatur Place NW.
