John and Shelby Higgs opened the vineyard in 2008, on land purchased by John’s father in 1934 when the farm was known as St. James Orchard. Clearing the land, tending the vines, and transforming the packing barn into a state-of-the-art winery has been a labor of love for the Higgs family. Located in the town of Clifton, VA and bordering the Bull Run River, Paradise Springs is the closest winery to Washington DC and the first in Fairfax County. The property was originally part of a land grant from Lord Fairfax in 1716 to the Kincheloe family and has been passed down through generations since. The property features a 1700’s log cabin, which was renovated in 1955 by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Home and Farm have been passed down through 8 generations of the Miller family. In 1827, John Miller Sr. purchased the land from Francis Thornton and built a modest family home with his son, “Poplar John”. The simple rectangular structure was built from bricks fired on the bank of the Thornton River and trees harvested from nearby Turkey Mountain. Sixty years later, John Byron made substantial additions including the present-day Owner’s Suite, Queen’s Room, and sitting porches.
