I’m Michelle, a Portland, Maine based wedding and couples photographer. I grew up in a small town in Connecticut, spent my college years and 20s in Boston, moved to New York City with my husband and now have found my way back to New England. I worked for eight years in event planning before going full-time with my photography business. I’m grateful for those eight years because they taught me so much that I’ve carried into managing my own small business. Beyond photography, I am an avid reader, love long bike rides, prefer the Monday crosswords, enjoy woodsy day hikes, and am always finding the nearest bookstore when we travel.

I’m a storyteller. That’s what I’m here to do - document the story of one of your greatest celebrations. My work is heavily focused on the authentic, unplanned moments. My approach is observational and real, creating images that are genuine representations of you, those you love, and the space and moments you share. I create true-to-life images that will bring you back to some of your sweetest, most treasured moments for years to come. Natural, documentary, photojournalistic. Real, raw, candid. We’re not going for any stiff prom poses here. I like to capture the day as it is and to document it as it unfolds. I never want to force anything, but I step in and direct where needed. Being in front of the camera isn’t my favorite thing either. I will be here to guide you and prompt you the whole way, I promise.

Nostalgia drove me into photography at an early age - and lead me into my studies of photojournalism. We know when we're at a critical juncture in our lives. You may even outwardly acknowledge it. For me, being able to authentically capture, to preserve those moments in a photograph is such a privilege. I know how much it means to me to be able to look back and say 'this is how things actually happened.' There is beauty in those truths. The kind of folks I work with share that appreciation.

Every weekend you'll find me oohing over a wedding dress, and holding my breath for the first moment the groom sees the bride. The wedding style I like the most is candid, but I definitely don't mind posing a nervous couple, or arranging that perfect artistic shot before the light changes. I am patient, calm, and encouraging... I think I get along with everyone... I'm like the nerdy extra bridesmaid with a really killer camera.

I have a long history as a photographer, starting in my twenties with large format view cameras, publishing a book of black and white portraits of Newfoundlanders, studying under Ansel Adams at his Yosemite workshops, and with Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan at the Rhode Island School of Design. Now, my cameras and equipment are all the latest digital models, but I still rely on my experience and a well trained eye for capturing the optimal moment.

I love what I do. I found my way to professional photography in a roundabout way, having started my working career as a marine scientist and environmental educator in CA and then on Maui. My all-time favorite thing is to sit by the fire with a glass of good cabernet or watch the ocean waves hit the beach. I love to garden and to build things (but I let my husband to finish all my projects LOL). I enjoy good food and will likely refer to a stand up comedy routine at least once in a conversation. I am also a football mom, lacrosse mom and basketball mom. Wife to a very understanding husband and emotional support person for my big puppies.
