South Church is a historic church in downtown Portsmouth, built circa 1825. There are no religious requirements to use the church for your wedding ceremony; you can use the officiant of your choice as long as they are legally allowed to perform a ceremony in the state of New Hampshire. South Church has a complete sound system so that couples and/or officiants can be heard, as well as use of the piano and/or organ, MP3 hookups, and pre-ceremony holding rooms. In 2007, Chestnut Street Church, already on the National Registry of Historic Places, was purchased and completely renovated, turning it into a locally loved and nationally acclaimed restaurant, Grace, in 2009. The Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden is a historic house museum, known as a hidden gem of Portsmouth, with views of the Piscataqua River. It is an ideal location for intimate weddings. The Moffatt-Ladd House was built between 1760 and 1763 for the only son of John Moffatt, one of the wealthiest men in the colony of New Hampshire prior to the Revolution. Samuel and Sarah Catherine Moffatt were the first to live in the house and they took up residence shortly after their wedding in February 1764. They would be the beginning of almost 150 years of the same family living in the stately home on Fore Street (now Market Street), overlooking the Piscataqua River.
