About this venue
Our story begins in 1858 when Frank Jones arrived in Portsmouth with a dream of brewing ale. Within three decades, The Frank Jones Brewery became the largest ale producer in the country. As ale production expanded, the brewery added a cooperage and scald house to clean the barrels. Workers used scalding hot rocks to sanitize barrels because soap and water would cause them to warp. Once cleaned, the barrels were filled with Jones’ signature ales. The Hawthorn now occupies this Scald House, retaining its original red-brick walls, towering beams, and industrial windows. “Cheers,” then, has a whole new meaning at The Hawthorn. When you raise your glass at your event, you’ll be toasting in a place that’s positively brewing with Portsmouth ale-making heritage and local history.

Housed in a trademark red-brick building on the aptly named Brewery Lane, our Portsmouth wedding and event venue is in strolling distance to the heart of historic downtown Portsmouth and its storied waterfront, and offers you and your guests an experience rich in local heritage. Host the ceremony beneath our wooden beams, and then hit the town after enjoying a sophisticated cocktail reception. Either way, you and yours will be getting a true taste of Portsmouth — all weekend long.

Constructed in the late 1800s, The Hawthorn is imbued with historic charm and industrial relics. As we reimagined the space, we kept its massive wooden beams, paned glass windows, and expansive red-brick walls, adding texture and elegance with sculptural brass light fixtures, luxe finishes, and velvet accents. To create a truly modern event venue, we added a full catering prep kitchen, a private host’s suite, and a statement-making 64-foot wraparound bar.
