I enjoyed baking when I was little, especially the times when my family would bake Christmas cookies together, but it wasn't until high school when I took a cake decorating class at Micheal's with my mom and sister that I discovered baking as an art form and truly fell in love. During my senior year, I decided to pursue baking as a career. While I loved working for local businesses, I wanted to be able to connect my baking back to my roots and began to experiment with my own recipes from my childhood. I started selling my baked goods to friends and family.

I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America as a pastry chef. In 1999, Gourmet Goodies was established in Victor, NY. Ira Gutner packed his bags, left a successful career in New York City’s Garment District and moved upstate to open Samuel’s of Rhinebeck, a boutique candy and coffee shop in the heart of bucolic Dutchess County. Ira named his shop after his late Uncle Sam who introduced him as a boy to penny candy. I began working for Ira as a 15-year-old after school and diligently worked my way up to store manager. Ira’s sudden passing in April 2014 left all of us in the community stunned and heartbroken.
