Although one year apart in age, we both attended Lathrop High School in Fairbanks. We both vaguely remember each other, but we did not have similar friends, hobbies, or classes. I admit to thinking that he was some weird wrestler kid and the Spanish teacher's son (not true). He admits to pointing out my picture in the yearbook and saying, "she's a cutie". Many years after high school, we both started the same new job in the emergency department at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital as techs at almost the same time. We became friends instantly, bonding over being LHS alumni and being happy to get scheduled on the same shift at work. After a year of being just friends, I started to realize that I might have some stronger feelings for this goofball who had been making me laugh harder than I even knew I could. During one shift at work, he told me about a time that he accidently dripped a patient's urine down his scrub leg, but ended up finishing the shift without cleaning it up. He said, "I've never told that to anyone before," and awkwardly walked away while I laughed my butt off. That was the moment I realized that I was starting to fall for him. After dodging some attempted arranged dates with other people, our first date consisted of me picking up his beer tab and making him two-step with me on the dance floor. Since then, we have grown more in love every day. FMH will always be the place that we began this journey, and we're so thankful for the people there that supported us as a couple from the start!
A few weeks before we were set for the drive/move down to Nashville, my Dad decided to have a "farewell to Amanda sparring class" for me at TaeKwon-Do. The class was packed full of people, even some family and friends there to watch. I didn't think much of the people who came to watch, because I figured they just wanted to come watch me spar one more time before I left. Seth was watching with his parents, brother, sister, and nephew. The class went great, and I was dead tired by the end of it. Within the last 5 minutes, Dad says, "okay, is there anyone else who wants to spar Amanda?" To my surprise, Seth, in his street clothes, stands up with sparring gear on and walks out onto the floor. Everyone, including me, started laughing. "Really?" I said. I rolled my eyes when he hit his gloves together a few times. So we start sparring. I refused to hit him very hard, so it was really just taps and fake punches most of the time. He kept motioning for me to hit him harder, and everyone was cheering for me to hit him harder, so I threw a high kick to his chin to make everyone happy. An "oooooh" filled the room, followed by laughter when I started hugging him and saying "I'm done hitting you, I'm done!" As I was hugging him, he took off his gloves and mouthpiece and took a knee, ring in hand. After he said something privately to me that nobody else could hear, he said, "will you marry me?" I was so shocked and lightheaded (that may have been from being out of breath, or getting hit in the head, who knows?) I said "yes" before I could even take out my mouthpiece. He stood up to hug me and everyone cheered. This was the most beautiful and perfect proposal I could have ever hoped for. Not only did Seth get the ring and ask my parent's permission months prior, he decided to include my parents and my entire TaeKwon-Do family in the moment. It was absolutely perfect.
