The structure and its unique intimacy were the trend in movie houses. Intentionally built in an African American neighborhood and focused on African American films, from the 1920’s into the 1960’s, The Strand was a vibrant part of the community. Unfortunately, as with many small businesses, it ran into trouble and has sat dormant since that time.
