Prior to the renovation in 2013 the historic building was used as housing accommodations for lumberjacks in the logging industry. For centuries, the beauty and natural treasures of the St. Croix Valley have drawn people to the area which is now Stillwater. The first to call this area home were the Sioux and Chippewa Nations. Later, the first traders and trappers in Minnesota Territory settled here. By the mid 1880’s, railroading and river activity helped build the community into a bustling town of 13,000 people. Stillwater became the trade center for miners and trappers to the North, and farmers and lumbermen to the West. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad eventually saw a need for a freight depot. In 1979, the historical significance of the building was recognized and the Freight House became the first building in Stillwater to be placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

In 1900, Frank D. Stout inherited part of his father’s lumber fortune, moved to Chicago, and within a few years was one of the wealthiest men in the country. Stout's was built in 1903 by Frank D. The Hollywood Theater is an iconic Art Deco landmark in Northeast Minneapolis. When it opened in 1936, the theater was described as “the incomparable showcase of the Northwest’’. After years of decline, the theater closed in 1987 and was purchased by the city of Minneapolis. Twenty-five years of inaction and neglect followed until 2014 when the National Park Service recognized the building’s historical significance and listed it on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2015 the theater was sold to Northeast-resident and entrepreneur Andrew Volna, who saved the building and restored its original Art Deco splendor. Today it is ready to host your event.
