San Miguel is considered one of the safest cities in Mexico and is safer than most large U.S. cities. With just over 110,000 residents, San Miguel is a quaint and friendly place with a welcoming community of locals and expats. Now, although San Miguel is very safe, we still urge you to employ the same common sense you would use in any city. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times and stay alert when walking through the city at night.

Your chances of crippling Zika infection: 0.0% However, there are a lot of margaritas in San Miguel de Allende!
We do not recommend renting a car. San Miguel is a relatively small dense town with narrow, cobblestone streets. The city is extremely walkable but please pack comfortable shoes!! Also, cabs are everywhere and very cheap!
San Miguel is known for its "eternal spring." The city is surrounded by mountains and sits at approximately 6,500 ft. Average February temperatures range from a sunny and warm 70-80 degrees during the day and a cool and clear 40-60 at night (think CA weather).
WALK Once you arrive in San Miguel, getting around is easy. Walking is the best and most fun way to get around. The city is extremely pedestrian-friendly and small enough that you hardly ever need to take a cab - even at night. Most of the streets are narrow with old, uneven cobblestones so be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes! TAXI Taxis are incredibly cheap, safe and plentiful throughout San Miguel! If needed, you can hail a cab from almost anywhere. Taxis are green and white and cost approximately 30 pesos ($2 USD) during the day. Fares are typically higher at night but no more than 60 pesos. Taxis in San Miguel do not have meters and only accept pesos. Very few drivers have change so be sure to have a stash of small bills with you. UBER For those that prefer door-to-door service, there are several reputable companies that offer private car service. One of the best is San Miguel Driver.

You can check with your hotel or house to ensure that your tap water is filtered. Ice and water served at most restaurants are typically purified but when it doubt, just order bottled water, it is widely available. It might be advisable to use it while brushing your teeth, too.
Voltage is 100v, just like the US. If your appliance has three prong make sure you bring a 2-prong adapter as not all outlets will be three prong.
YES! As of 2007, all Americans traveling to Mexico must present a valid passport upon arrival in Mexico and upon return to the US. If you require a new/updated passport we recommend doing so at least 3 months in advance to help ensure it is ready on time.
Layers, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes are all musts! The sun will be strong during the day but at night temperatures drop so we recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater for the evenings. Leave the high heels at home.
We recommend contacting your cell phone carrier to purchase an international call, text, and/or data plan if you plan to use your phone for communication and navigation. Otherwise, we suggest putting your phone on Airplane mode and accessing wi-fi from various places around town (including most hotels and restaurants) that offer it for free.
