Train
By far the cheapest and often quickest way to get around the city is the subway. If this is your first time in New York City we would recommend watching this video which gives a great overview of tips for riding the subway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-Vm3qGh_go Or, if you want the detailed guide check out this webpage published by the MTA. https://www.nycsubwayguide.com/subway/
Travel Note
Another great way to get around the city. Any of these options will work perfectly well, though on occasion flagging down a taxi can be tricky. At any time of day you can get a Lyft or Uber from virtually anywhere in the city. We will not be arranging transportation from the hotels to the rehearsal dinner or ceremony/reception and anticipate most guests will use this option to get to these events (or the subway).
Flight
Despite its less than stellar reputation, LGA has been recently renovated and is a great option to fly into/out of. It is the closest airport to Greenpoint with a car ride taking around 20 minutes. Options for transportation from LGA to the venue/hotels include: Uber/lyft/taxi (Difficulty 1 /5: Easy breezy): We would recommend one of these options, and usually take a lyft or uber. While taxis can be perfectly fine, if you get stuck in traffic they can be quite a bit more expensive. Cost will likely be around $25-$35 (unless traveling during the morning or evening rush hour, in which case it will likely be more). Public Transportation (Difficulty 4/5: Only for the public transit purists): While we wouldn't recommend it, you can save money by taking public transit from La Guardia. It will take around 45 min to 1 hour, and requires some walking, one bus ride, and two or three different subway lines. Monetary cost would be about $6, but the cost to your sanity could be high. If you take this option use google maps, we've never done it so you're on your own...
Flight
JFK is the second closest airport to Greenpoint, and another good option for flying in. Depending on traffic a car ride would take somewhere between 30-50 min. Taxi (Difficult 1/5: Easy Breezy): At JFK the taxi's are located close to the terminals and are the easiest option, but may not be the cheapest with the cost ranging from $50-80. Lyft/Uber (Difficulty 2/5: Requires some effort): Lyft and Uber are slightly more difficult here because (depending on what terminal you fly into), you may need to take the AirTrain in order to get to where you can meet your driver. It's not hard to figure out, but does require some navigating. Cost is probably around $50. Public Transit (Difficulty 3/5: Not for those easily confused): Public transit from JFK is how we get back and forth. Often it only takes a bit more time than a car and the cost is about $13/person. Total transit time is around 1-1.5 hours depending on time of day. This route does involve three separate trains (the AirTrain, and two subways) but Google Maps will guide you well. You will be REQUIRED to buy a subway card in order to pay for the JFK AirTrain, whereas at all other subways stations you are able to tap a contactless credit card or Apple Wallet.
Flight
EWR is your final option for flying into the city. We rank this airport last because it is the furthest from where you will be headed, meaning it will also be the most expensive to get to and from. Also, it requires you to go to New Jersey... But I digress. Uber/Lyft/Taxi (Difficulty 1/5: Easy Breezy): All these are easy to find from the airport but can be costly. The ride to Greenpoint will take at least an hour (unless arriving very early or very late), and you should expect to pay $70-$110. We recommend taking an Uber or Lyft if you take a car since you will be going through Manhattan to get to Brooklyn, and will likely get caught in some traffic. Public Transit (Difficulty 3.25/5: Leave extra time): Public transit from EWR is a perfectly reasonable option but will require you to take a New Jersey transit train into Manhattan, and then two subway lines to get to Greenpoint (and depending on your terminal you may need to take the Newark AirTrain). We take this when we go to the airport and it works great, but is slightly complicated by the fact you are traveling on multiple transit systems. Again, use Google Maps as your guide and you will be fine. Total cost would be around $13/person and will likely take 1-1.5 hours. Note that this is close to the same amount of time it takes in a car so it is a good way to save yourself a chunk of change.
Train
Amtrak is a great option for people traveling from Boston or DC. I promise you will not regret your decision to take the train instead of the probably cheaper, but significantly worse bus option. Amtrak will take you into the newly built Moynihan Train Station. From Moynihan you can take the subway or a Lyft/Uber/Taxi to Brooklyn. If you are coming from New Jersey, the broader New York area, or Connecticut you can also take NJ Transit or Metro North into Penn Station or Grand Central. We are assuming that if you are taking one of these trains you know what you are doing but if that's not the case feel free to reach out to us!
Rental Car
We would strongly advise against renting a car to get around unless you have a very good reason to do so (such as accessibility issues). It will likely be cheaper to Uber/Lyft your way around, plus parking and driving in the city can be hellish.
