Although we met in 2020 while working at Atrium Pineville in the ICU during the Covid pandemic, our relationship at that time was purely professional. While we had bonded over our love of the outdoors and National Parks, we had never spent any time together outside of those ICU walls. When Nick left to travel nurse, he invited all who would listen to come out to Salt Lake to go snowboarding with him. And for those who know Cassie well, you know that all she ever needs is an invitation to start planning her next trip. Cassie and her friend/bridesmaid, Miranda, who also worked with us both travelled to Salt Lake City in January of 2022. While we both went snowboarding in Park City, Miranda enjoyed the luxury of nearby spas and we all met up for some après ski fun in the evenings. On our last day of snowboarding, on our last run of the day, just 20 feet from the gondola to take us back to the village, Nick took a short cut and after second guessing himself to go right vs. left, he snowboarded right into a tree breaking his femur. While Cassie tried to use some medical humor to make Nick feel better, it was the overall support she gave going to the mountain clinic that began to bring them closer together. After their ski trip, Nick was supposed to pack up his apartment and drive to Denver for his next travel RN contract. Now on crutches with a leg immobilizer, that was going to be no easy feat. Cassie rearranged her travel plans to stay a few extra days to help him pack and move into his car. It was over those few days, we both realized how much we have in common and how much we both enjoyed spending time with each other. After Cassie flew back to NC and Nick moved to Denver, we continued to talk almost daily. And the rest, as they say, is history :)
