Tulum just opened an airport 30-40 min away from the center of the city! - You can rent a car from the airport and drive yourself (we suggest this as car rentals are MUCH cheaper than taxis/shuttles). Plus, you have more freedom :) Scroll down for car rental info. - You can take a private car to your hotel for $38 (1-2 people). Please note that since it's a new airport all private car transfers from Tulum Airport must be booked upon arrival in person at Tulum International Airport. Cancun International Airport (CUN)
The Cancun airport is 1.5 hours away from Tulum - You can rent a car from the airport and drive yourself (we suggest this as car rentals are MUCH cheaper than taxis/shuttles). Seriously, you can find as low as $50 a night! You likely won't find beachfront ones, but we suggest staying in La Veleta or Aldea Zama areas. Tulum center is relatively small so you can't really go wrong!

Again, we HIGHLY recommend you rent a car as it is by far the cheapest way to get around (we've always done this). Taxi prices can stack up! Taxis are widely available but don't have meters, so ALWAYS negotiate the fare before getting in. Knowing some basic Spanish or having the address written down/on your phone can be helpful. **Uber is unavailable in Tulum** Make sure you ask how much before you get in the car ("cuanto cuesta?" in Spanish). Tulum is ALWAYS under construction...the roads can be like a real-life game of Mario Kart! This often leads to road closures, detours, or traffic - so please leave early :) Underneath the chaos, you'll find the peace and beauty that makes this place so special. Have some extra patience and let the magic unfold!
