Acadia is one of the most gorgeous places on the Eastern Seaboard. It is a vast park with everything from sand beaches, rocky coastlines, landside bike paths and mountain peaks. Hiking up the North Ridge trail of Cadillac Mountain and riding the Carriage trails around Eagle Lake have been two of our favorites year after year but there is also the spectacular vistas of Sand Beach and Otter Point. Choose your own adventure!
This was Peter Mulhern's happy place. It is a dockside restaurant which specializes in seafood straight out of the Penobscot Bay. The menu is limited but everything is delicious and the view of Mount Desert Island is spectacular.
This is the best roadside lobster shack that this area has to offer. Trust us, we're connoisseurs. If you end up at Carriers, and you should, GET THE CURLY FRIES.
Downeast Maine is chock full of charming little seaside towns. Castine, home of Maine Maritime Academy, has a lovely harbor area which is great if you're looking for an afternoon of ice cream and quaint shops. The town of Blue Hill has some delicious restaurants, a homey old-school bookshop (Blue Hill Books) and East Blue Hill Beach.
This is a family favorite and makes for an excellent morning hike. It's short and steep with some rocky sections but the gorgeous views are well worth the hour and a half roundtrip.
If you're not terrified of heights, the observatory is a lovely way to see some of the Penobscot River and Bay. The views are absolutely spectacular.
What to say about Anglers...If you're looking for a place with killer fried seafood and not a vegetable in sight, it really doesn't get much better than Anglers. They happen to also have a delicious array of dessert, including Oliver's favorite, Tollhouse Pie.
