The McDonald family operated grist mills at this location on the North Fork of the Roanoke River from the 1790's until 1923. George McDonald was the first of the family to settle the branch of the Wilderness Road that followed Native American trails up Catawba Creek and down the North Fork. McDonald built a sawmill, the first grist mill, and a stone fortified barn. The current mill started operation in 1861 and was the focal point for a community that included a store, post office, school and church. The mill ceased operations in 1923, and the property was acquired by Jay's great-grandparents, Edward and Marian Yost, in 1952. McDonalds Mill is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the property is under conservation easement.
