The Proposal

Meet Cute, as told by BiJon

April 2018

In 2018, I was interning at a place in Towson during my senior year at Stevenson. Jamael was a mail carrier in the area, so I would randomly see him a few times over the weeks on the days I was actually there. I thought he was cute, and he complimented me on my glasses and my outfit, and I thought, maybe, he'd ask me for my number eventually... but, no. Since he didn't, I figured he was just being nice, but not interested in me. Until one day, he asked for my name. I just knew he would ask me for my number, too… Nope. Finally, I resolved to ask him the next time he came to my internship if he didn't ask me. It wouldn't be for another week because he was on a weekly schedule. On that day, I got dressed in a really cute outfit to hype myself up and... he didn't show up. Instead, the regular carrier showed up, so I figured maybe Jamael was on vacation or something. Turns out, I just had the wrong day because the following day I was working and I heard the elevator doors ding. I looked up, expecting to greet a client, and in walked Jamael. In my mind, I quickly went over my outfit, trying to make sure I didn't look a mess. However, Jamael barely said hello, dropped the mail off, and proceeded to leave. I called out to him and he turned. I said, "it's Jamael, right?" and he replied, "Yeah... I'm going to be honest with you: I forgot your name." I said, "wow, how'd you forget my name when you asked me for my name?" He apologized, so I told him what it was again, but I wasn't going to ask him for his number right then and there. A few days later, I had just got off from my part-time job and was at Target in Owings Mills, just looking around while my mom shopped for a baby shower gift for a family friend. Someone from behind me called my name and when I turned, it was Jamael with one of his brothers. I was definitely not in my best outfit since I came straight from work (black t-shirt and khakis). He was looking all fine in some tank top, showing off his muscles and tattoos. We ended up walking around the entire store, all three of us. Jamael and I were talking about a few things, and he invited me over to play board games with him sometime. We got to talking about where we lived and I told him I lived by the movie theater. He replied, "In Greenwich?" I thought it was weird because most people who didn’t live there didn’t know how to pronounce it. He told me that's where he lived too. He asked what street and I told him, and again, he replied that he lived there too. We both realized we not only lived on the same street, but also, we lived right next door to each other for almost a year. Like RIGHT next door. Obviously, this was only made possible by my lack of talking to my neighbors, but I also like to say it was kismet. Y'all know how the rest of our story goes...

For all the days along the way
