How They Met

Ben and Emily met at St. Cloud State University through Greek Life. Ben was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and Emily was in Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority. They often were at parties together and had many of the same classes!

The First Date

They were friends for a couple of years before they went on their first date. Ben took Emily to Granite City in St. Cloud and then on a walk around Lake George before they had to go to campus for their weekly chapter meetings for their sorority/fraternity. Ben asked Emily to be his girlfriend on April 27, 2019, on a bus on the way to Delta Sigma Phi's Fraternity Formal.

The Proposal

July 15, 2023

Ben and Emily decided to spend a weekend up north in Lutsen, MN. Neither of them had been so they bought tickets to do the Alpine Slide and the Gondola. On the morning of July 15th, they realized that the slide and gondola didn't open till 11 a.m. There weren't a lot of restaurants or other things in Lutsen, so they decided to drive into Grand Marais. On the drive, they saw the sign for Cascade River State Park and said that they should stop and see the waterfall later that day. While in Grand Marais, they stopped at the 'World's Greatest Donut' shop, walked by the lake, did some shopping, and made their way back to Lutsen. They decided to stop at Cascade River State Park on the way and hike around to see the waterfalls. They hiked for a bit and then decided to make their way down to a rock in front of the falls. A family was taking pictures there and asked Ben and Emily if they wanted a picture, which Emily said 'yes!'. Ben was walking behind Emily and pulled the ring box out and showed the dad of the family and also handed him his phone to take pictures. Emily was busy fixing her hair and didn't even notice! Once they got in position to take the picture, Ben got down on one knee and asked Emily to marry him, and she of course said 'YES!'. Emily later found out Ben had been carrying the ring around in his pocket all morning, covered by a sock to disguise the ring box shape, to wait for the perfect moment to present itself. Ben and Emily spent the rest of the day enjoying the moment together. They stopped at the North Shore Winery and enjoyed live music. They went back to Grand Marais and went to Voyageur Brewing and played Cribbage (One of their favorite activities together). And they got THE BEST tacos at Hungry Hippie Tacos. Once they got home the next day, they told their family and friends the happy news!
