We met in the fall of 2015 while working for the Appalachian Mountain Club. Fall in the white mountains is stunning, and we enjoyed our outdoor education and backcountry conservation work while looking for excuses to run into each other (which we found). We parted ways that fall only to find each other in the same place again a year later. On a Friday night in September, we both assisted with a carry-out for an injured hiker on Mt. Moriah. The night was long and gave us a heightened respect for both the mountains and each other. We share fond memories of the following months, from bonfires and the first snowfall to repairing tattered hiking shoes and car camping in Ace's Mercedes wagon. We fell in love that fall in the mountains but became best friends over the following years while long-distance dating. Being 6 hours apart was tough, but we cherished our weekend adventures and spent time making plans for the future. We both dreamed of animals and a homestead and started growing our family when we adopted our dog, River, in 2017. In the following years, we spent time getting to know each other's communities, first when Ace spent a growing season at Birdsfoot Farm in 2019, and when we moved in with his mom during the pandemic. Somewhere in there we bought and converted a school bus into a tiny home while Emlyn went to graduate school. Last summer we made a much-anticipated move to Norway, Maine where we are grateful to own a few acres of land. We drove the bus 400+ miles from Connecticut to Maine (!) and started the work of settling in. A few weeks later Emlyn proposed on South Baldface Mountain. We love western Maine and are enjoying building a community here as we start the process of turning our property into a homestead. Stay tuned for a house in the next few years.
