How We Met

First comes school, then comes more school, then marriage

Nick and Emily's journey began at Michigan Technological University in the frigid Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They crossed paths at a bonfire held by their Douglass Houghton Hall Resident Assistants (RAs) on Breakers Beach. However, their initial encounter was not without its misconceptions. Emily perceived Nick as a smooth-talker, leading her to believe he was a player. Little did she know that fate had a different plan in store for them. That night, Nick and Emily unknowingly took their first step towards a lifelong partnership. The following week, Emily and her roommate invited Nick to a swing dancing event in Chassel, MI. What started as a fun evening turned into a memorable seven-mile walk back to the dorms, during which they had the opportunity to truly get to know each other. Their connection grew stronger, eventually leading them to make their relationship "Facebook official." As the saying goes, "if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, then it's probably a duck," and Nick and Emily knew they had found something special. Both Nick and Emily continued their journey at Michigan Tech, becoming RAs themselves and enduring four years of cafeteria food in the same dorms. They successfully graduated with their Bachelor's degrees and decided to take the next step in their relationship by moving in together in Ypsilanti, MI. Despite the presence of an amazing disc golf course at their apartment complex, they did not take advantage of it during their time there. Instead, they focused on creating a home for themselves, which soon expanded to include their beloved pets: Karma, the cat, and Waffles, the dog. However, life had another twist in store for them. Emily set her sights on becoming a physical therapist and was accepted into the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Recognizing the importance of Emily's ambitions and future, both Nick and Emily agreed to embark on a long-distance relationship. Just as they were adjusting to the challenges of being apart, the world was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, Emily was able to continue her summer classes remotely in Michigan, allowing them to spend more time together. It was during this period that they discovered a shared passion for disc golf, which soon turned into a mutual obsession. In November 2020, after a day filled with birthday celebrations and hiking adventures, Nick proposed to Emily. He presented her with a custom book that beautifully illustrated the many reasons why he loved her. Over the next two years, they patiently navigated the trials of long-distance while Emily completed her schooling. Finally, the day arrived when Emily could return to Michigan for her clinical rotations, and they wasted no time. They purchased their own home in Plymouth, MI, laying down roots and creating a space where their love could thrive. Following three challenging years of graduate school, Emily accomplished her dream of graduating with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. With this milestone reached, Nick and Emily finally had the opportunity to plan their long-awaited wedding, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
