The not-so-cautionary tale of crushing on a co-worker...

July 2014

Peter and Emily met when Emily joined the marketing team at New Relic. They first talked at Rosa Mexicano, where Emily couldn't believe she'd met someone who'd lived in the Bay Area his entire life. As weeks passed, they found themselves easily lost in conversation if they happened to bump into each other in the hallway or "snack alley". They were often the last two people chatting at a happy hour, having been abandoned by co-workers long before they realized they were alone. Peter would tell his roommates about this amazing girl he was crushing on at work. After a few months of hallway flirting, Emily invited Peter to her Halloween Party (one of only two co-workers invited) where she thought she was laying it on pretty thick. Apparently not thick enough because when Peter got home he told his roommates he literally thought there was no chance...

Forgotten keys and a bad tinder date

November 2014

The marketing team held a mandatory offsite two days before Thanksgiving and, as a 'thank-you', hosted a happy hour afterwards. Emily stayed at the offsite late, and when a set a forgotten keys was found in the conference room, she offered to bring them to the happy hour to find out who's they were. Spoiler alert: they were Peter's. In a surprising twist, Peter was not at the happy hour. He'd skipped out to go out on a Tinder date instead. Trying not to seem disappointed, Emily feigned interest, asking how the date went when Peter showed up to retrieve his keys. She was thrilled to hear the Tinder date went horribly. The night evolved into bar hopping with co-workers, until Max (best friend-roommate-brother) called Emily to join him and some friends at a dive bar in North Beach to play pool. No one wanted to join Emily. No one, except for Peter. After a few rounds of pool, and more flirting, Peter realized his phone was dead. He offered to walk Emily home in exchange for her calling an Uber on his behalf. Playfully running through the streets, they arrived at Emily's apartment on Greenwich, and she called an Uber. The Uber pulled up, Emily gave Peter "the look" and.... he backed up, waved goodbye, hopped into the car, and pulled away. Emily went inside and pouted to Max surprised that no move had been made. 15 minutes later, her phone rang, number unknown, and a voice on the other end said, "Hey - uh... do you have my keys?". The keys had been forgotten, yet again, and happened to have found their way into Emily's back pocket. Emily was laughing from the doorstep as the Uber pulled up to 871 Greenwich for the second time. Peter walked to the door. Emily handed him the keys, grabbed him by the collar, and pulled him in for a kiss. A few moments later, Peter stepped back, looked Emily straight in the eyes and said, "Can I please take you on a date?". And as they say, the rest is history.
