How We Met

From Dana's Perspective

August 14 2013 It was a summer night in Montreal, almost 9 years ago. My friend asked if I wanted to come out to Flyjin to watch her boyfriend DJ. Turns out, that DJ was Kyle's best friend, and while I was familiar with his friend circle, I had never met or even seen Kyle around (a rare scenario in the Montreal Jewish scene). There he was, with his big, bright genuine smile, walking over to talk to introduce himself. We immediately connected over our love for travel (I had just returned from a summer course in Greece and he had just returned from a semester abroad in Paris). Little did we know how much travel & adventure was in store for us - Israel, Greece, America, Canada, Denmark, Italy, England, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia - and that 9 years later, we'd tie the knot in the first place we travelled to as a couple...

The Proposal

From Kyle's Perspective

June 03, 2021 I knew it would be nearly impossible to pull off a surprise proposal since Dana and I do everything together and she has a super strong intuition - she always knows if I’m ‘up to something’. I figured the only way it would be possible is if I combined the proposal with an unsuspicious 'regular activity'. Last summer, Dana and I spent a few months in Los Angeles. We had a list of to-do’s while we were there that included going on our own 'graffiti tour' of the street art on Melrose Avenue. Knowing Dana loves the art scene, this felt like the perfect opportunity. I just had to come up with how to actually to pop the question... It finally came to me: I'd propose through a graffiti mural. I contacted LA street artists and tried to find an empty wall. This was much harder than I expected; street artists weren't able to meet my 1-month deadline and it’s practically impossible to find an open wall along Melrose (no artist is willing to paint near or on another artists work since it can cause a “turf war” - that’s the exact term they use!). Finally, I found this amazing and talented artist, Amy Smith, who worked with me to find the solution. She created the painted mural of Dana & I on wood panels and then mounted them on top of another mural (only for a short period of time, to not upset any local artists). On the morning of June 3rd, Dana and I went on our mural tour. It started with a breakfast bagel from the Yeastie Boys foodtruck, and then we went to explore the colorful graffiti-decorated streets along Melrose Ave. To wrap up the walk, we turned onto Stanley street and I said “Wow... you won’t believe this mural we’re about to pass - you’re going to freak!” With her eyes covered, Dana said: “Omg is it Freddie Mercury!?" (classic...) I walked her across the street to the mural which read: “Will You Marry Me?” uncovered her eyes, got down on one knee and the rest is history...
