While discussing what we wanted our wedding to look like and the experience we were desiring, our top priorities (besides getting married!) were to hold the ceremony outdoors and spend as much quality time with our guests as possible. After much searching and deliberating, we decided to take the plunge on an outdoor wedding weekend in a national park. This venue honors our love of adventure and affords a little extra time with our family and friends…because one night of partying isn’t enough for us!
New River Gorge was designated as a National River in 1978 and redesignated as a National Park in 2020. The river is one of very few in the world that flows from south to north. The park houses one of the tallest bridges in the United States. The 70,000+ acres boasts many historic structures including homes, churches and a 19th century coal town. The New River area held over 60 coal towns. This caught the attention of the Covington + Ohio railroad which brought immigrant workers to the area.
Adventures on the Gorge is an adventure compound that specializes in outdoor experiences for families, children, and groups, etc. The amount of water excursions they offer is expansive but don't let that take away from the land and aerial adventures available. There are a variety of accommodations on this compound and lodging directly with the resort will allow access to the pool and disc golf. On-site lodging does book quickly. Please consider making your reservation sooner rather than later if you'd like to stay on the compound grounds. You do not have to stay on-site in order to partake in any adventure activities. More information (including booking) on the compound is found in the Travel and FAQ's section of our site.
Chris and Taylor booked their first trip without being an "official" couple. They were enjoying each other's company at a brewery outside, the sun was shining and Taylor was two beers in with a birthday coming up. She mentioned to Chris that she was buying a plane ticket to Denver as a birthday present to herself because she needed to see some mountains. Chris asked if he could join and the rest is history!
