“I owe it all to chocolate, artbooks and young men.”-Beatrice “Beato” Wood Beatrice Wood, known as the “Mama of Dada”, lived until 105 and created art every day. One of the few women to pioneer an avant-garde movement, Wood made her mark in the art world with gravitas and whimsy. Beato Chocolates was anti-established in Ojai to honor this trailblazing woman. Woman-owned and artist focused, our handcrafted, Fair Trade Certified bars, use the finest, locally sourced ingredients. Ojai, Wood said, was like finding “the gold at the end of a long obstacle-strewn rainbow.” Beato Chocolates offers a sweet taste of her special valley.
Ojai Meadows Preserve is a habitat restoration and flood control project by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC). The non-profit manages about 2,300 acres of open space, of which 2,000 acres are open to the public for free. The goal of OVLC is to protect and restore the natural lands, watersheds, wildlife habitats, and scenic views of Ojai. For a day of relaxation, head to this breathtaking oasis and enjoy the best of nature. Ojai Meadows Preserve is located adjacent to the Nordhoff High School football stadium. It is a gorgeous wetland environment consisting of 27 miles of hiking trails, flowers, birds, wildlife, and native live oaks, sycamores, and cottonwoods.
This lovely little market is in the neighborhood of Meiners Oaks, just west of downtown Ojai. Pop in for pre-made sandwiches, a super-fresh salad bar and an abundance of local produce and picnic-friendly sundries for hotel cooking, hiking or camping (you can also pick up great gifts such as locally made aprons and cute kitchen-ware). If you have a little more time, order from the menu of eclectic lunch options (we suggest the squash and goat cheese tacos or the handmade sopes), all of which can be made vegan upon request. There are also fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies and an ever-changing list of desserts. You can find ample seating inside and out, and you're bound to see some colorful Ojai characters come and go while you dine.
