Halfway through their AP Physics class during senior year of high school, Mr. Burtness re-arranged the classroom seating and put Brooke in the back of the classroom. Using her poor eyesight as an excuse, Brooke asked to be moved to the front of the class - where she was put right in front of Jake's seat. Over the next few months, Jake and Brooke would begin their friendship over group projects and physics study sessions. When Brooke began going to the boys swim meets, Jake assumed it was because she was with all of her female swimming friends. When she began showing up to the lacrosse games that spring, he finally started to get the hint. In April of their senior year of high school, Jake finally asked Brooke to prom, and the rest was history!
In June of 2016, with the facade of celebrating Brooke's completion of her Step 1 exam, Jake planned the perfect surprise proposal! The day started off with a big breakfast of blueberry pancakes and mimosas, only to be followed by a picturesque hike in a nearby state park. To Brooke's curiosity, Jake was extremely preoccupied with finding a great lunch spot with a view. Even though she wasn't quite hungry yet, Brooke agreed to a spot on top of Melrose Rock for lunch. Being difficult (without knowing it), Brooke began to walk toward the shade and the path down the hill while finishing her apple. When Jake offered to bring her apple core back to throw out and bent down with his backpack, Brooke stubbornly replied that apples were biodegradable as she threw her core into the woods and began walking away. When she heard Jake call her name, Brooke turned around to find him down on one knee with a beautiful ring in his hand! After some convincing that this wasn't a joke, she said yes!
