How it all Started

Camp Goggles--2009

It was the summer of 2009. Sarah had just graduated from high school and Andrew finished his first year at University of Colorado Boulder. Both were driving up the windy dirt road to a place they both call home--Sky Ranch Lutheran Church Camp. Sarah was the high ropes course specialist and Andrew was a backpacking guide. After several weeks of living in the beautiful Colorado Rockies, diving into God's word with hundreds of campers, not showering, no internet access, no cell phones, living with the same community of 40 college kids, Sarah and Andrew developed 'camp goggles.' Every counselor at every camp has experienced this temporary illness where dorky, nerdy, weird coworkers become more and more attractive over the course of the summer. After an entire summer of attempting to flirt, they decided to date. Naturally their first date was climbing Quandary Peak, a 14,000 foot mountain close to Breckenridge, and ending with a movie night in the basement of Andrew's parent's house... watching Toy Story. The camp goggles only lasted a couple months. However a new form of goggles developed. The two simply became goggle-less friends. They rock climbed at El Dorado Canyon, hiked 14ers, played broomball, traveled to NYC, went skiing and worked together at youth gatherings. When Andrew was certain "that ship has sailed," Sarah asked him three years later, while pulling into the parking lot of camp, if he wanted to date... again. Not relationship rooted in camp goggles, but instead of one rooted in being adventure buddies.

A Kiwi Proposal

April 2017

Andrew was acting funny about his carry on luggage. "Why is he so possessive!?" Sarah wondered during their third missed flight to New Zealand. Little did she know, he had a special gift buried in the bottom under his stack of underwear, climbing shoes and laptop. Sarah and Andrew traveled to the land down under in April 2017 for a month of campervan living. They hiked, kayaked, rock climbed and explore the hut system. After a week and a half of traveling they arrived in Te Anau, the gateway to Fjordlands National Park, where they were preparing to launch for a week long backpacking trip bouncing from hut to hut. Packs were all set and the two sat on a log, eating the horrible bean burritos Sarah attempted to cook, watching the sunset over the glacier lake. Sarah was playing with stones lining the water rambling on about how she could take these pebbles home to create some do-it-yourself candle holder (since there was nothing else to talk about). She looked up from her hands full of stones to Andrew swinging over onto one knee with the biggest and most sincere smile. "Sarah, can I add one more rock to your collection? Will you marry me?" Yep. Sarah stole a hand full of stones from New Zealand. She had to after that line...
