About Dogwood Lane Photography

Ally Nelson

Owner

After shooting weddings throughout high school, I set my camera down when I went to college. I thought I would go, get a corporate career, and just take gorgeous photos of my kids (currently 2 cats and 2 dogs) one day. Three degrees later, the corporate life was draining. My love for telling love stories had never went away. When I picked up my camera again, I felt at home. I’ve run wholeheartedly into this dream and I belong here. Telling love stories, making fast friends, documenting your favorite moments, adventuring through the woods, meeting all the dogs - this is my home.

I’m a photographer, but I think storyteller is more accurate (maybe even new best friend). I’m here to tell your love story and be your sidekick through your greatest adventures to date. You’ve found your person, I’m your friend with the camera and the best is yet to come.

I really adored this photographer’s portfolio photos on Zola, so I booked my wedding with her. I was so excited about the photos because her style seemed like just what I wanted. When it came to the wedding, she did get a couple gorgeous photos like the ones in her portfolio- but then rest I was surprised on. The spot she picked for family photos had spotty lighting on all of us- where the only photo I got with my immediate family essentially cut my face in half where one half was insanely bright…it was so disappointing. I also had to get my planner to ask her to do solo portraits of just me before the day started- I wouldn’t think I’d have to track the photographer down to get those. Finally, I felt communication was lacking. The photos were delivered 10 weeks after the wedding and I felt that we could have discussed more about her plan for the day and the types of shots she typically looks to get, etc. There were several photos I thought the photographer could have spent more time on editing- such as the blemish on the groom’s face or the shadow of someone’s head directly in the middle of my dress as I walked down the aisle. In the end she did take some nice golden hour photos and some good dancing photos which I’m happy about. I just wish I had asked her beforehand to see full galleries of wedding she’s done and not just accepted the “highlights” photos she has on Zola.
