According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

Celeste and Alex were not only incredibly talented but also genuinely lovely to be around. And having Catherine who owns Windy City Glam and is also a close friend and one of my bridesmaids, made it feel all the more special. We got ready at the Hyatt House in West Loop, which isn’t the most spacious or salon-like spot for hair and makeup. But Celeste and Alex showed up early, fully prepared, and made the space work so seamlessly you’d think they set up there all the time. It held beautifully all day and night through wind and nonstop dancing. My bridesmaids and mom also looked gorgeous, with styles that fit each person’s hair type and vibe. Alex was calm, focused, and incredibly efficient, but she never made anyone feel rushed. She cared about how everyone felt walking out of that chair. Catherine was a huge help behind the scenes with planning the schedule. She organized the timeline for hair and makeup so well that we stayed on track the entire morning without feeling on a timer. That kind of planning and attention to detail made the day run much more smoothly and let me enjoy the getting-ready part instead of stressing about timing. “Alina did my bridal trial in May and then makeup for me, my mother, my maid of honor and my now wife. I really struggled to find a makeup artist whose work was elegant and timeless. Everyone I had seen before meeting Alina was applying makeup in a very heavy handed way, which just didn't suit the style we were going for. Alina did a wonderful job, everyone's makeup stayed on all day, even though we got married on a hot, humid D.C day. “I have worked with Sophia for three weddings. As a bride and as a bridesmaid, Sophia made me look and feel like my best self. Sophia was a dream to work with during the planning process of my wedding. She was extremely organized and helped me to make sure that my day-of timeline was efficient. At my makeup trial, Sophia took her time and made sure I was happy with every detail of my makeup, pausing and checking in throughout the process. On the morning of my wedding, Sophia was prepared and punctual. Her calm presence in the busy room helped me to feel at ease and relaxed. As she did my makeup, we sang throwback songs together and laughed. When Sophia worked on family members that were less comfortable with certain parts of the makeup process, Sophia made them feel comfortable and safe with her. She assured everyone that they could try things, and if they didn’t like them they could change up the plan. She made both my mom and mother-in-law feel comfortable and confident trying false eyelashes for the first time. Sophia helped everyone feel beautiful and happy! Over the course of the year as we progressed through the three weddings, I got to know Sophia on a personal level.
