Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, DJ Smartz began learning the art of DJing at 15 as a skating rink DJ. DJ Smartz was a b-boy during his time as a skating rink DJ and through battles with the crew Hypnotik Body Rock he was introduced to turntablism at the age of 17. Smartz bought his first set of turntables at the age of 19 and from there has become one of the most prominent open format DJ's in Charleston and the surrounding areas.

We consist of 7-members and when we play weddings or other events we include a sound engineer with some stage lighting. We also provide other services for an extra fee. We held down a 15-year residency at The Word Famous Cantab Lounge in Central Square, Cambridge, MA before the 2020 pandemic. Not only am I the band's client relations manager, I also play saxophone and am the band's emcee. These are my ALL-TIME favorite genres to perform and The Chicken Slacks have mastered the art of re-invigorating these special genres.
