Local Favorites

These are just a few of our favorite things to do while visiting Grandfather. You can't go wrong with any of these local gems.
Beacon Heights

Beacon Heights

Beacon Heights Trail, Linville, NC 28646

You could do this hike in sandals - it's that easy. 15 minutes to the top (and just 15 minutes from Grandfather!). The view is spectactular. This is a great place to bring a snack, take a seat, and take in the blue ridge mountains in all their glory.

Grandfather Winery

Grandfather Winery

225 Vineyard Lane, Banner Elk, NC 28604

This is where you go for a little live music, good wine, and a walk through the vines. Just 15 minutes down the road from Grandfather Golf & Country Club and 10 minutes from the Best Western.

Little Deer Café

Little Deer Café

3616 Mitchell Avenue, Linville, NC 28646
, (828) 733-9333

This little coffee shop is a hidden gem - and serves up one of Michael and Maggie's favorite sandwiches: The Caprese Wrap (make sure you get it on a spinach tortilla, pressed!).

Old Hampton Store & Barbeque

Old Hampton Store & Barbeque

77 Ruffin Street, Linville, NC 28646
, (828) 733-5213

This old mountain store has the perfect atmosphere to make you feel like you have finally arrived in the Appalachian mountains. Don't miss their BBQ sandwiches!

Blowing Rock Shops

Blowing Rock Shops

1179 Main Street, Blowing Rock, NC 28605

Blowing rock is a great place to shop, eat, and hang out during the day. It's a cute little town just over 25 minutes from Grandfather mountain.

Grandfather Profile Trail

Grandfather Profile Trail

This is one of the more famous - and more challenging - hikes on the mountain. If you want to do this one, come prepared with a packed lunch, and a buddy to pick you up at the top (just a mere four-hour hike from the base) .

LP on Main

LP on Main

171 Main Street East, Banner Elk, NC 28604
, (828) 898-5656

Great for an upscale dinner on Friday night!

Hawksbill Mountain Trail

Hawksbill Mountain Trail

This 1.5-mile round-trip hike to the summit of Hawksbill Mountain has an amazing payoff with panoramic views of the canyon of Linville Gorge Wilderness Area - with the valley floor and Linville River 2,000 ft. below you. On a clear day, you can even see the skyline of Charlotte - about 90 miles away! The strenuous hike climbs about 700 ft. in elevation, so allow plenty of time.

For all the days along the way
