Like in any big city, New Orleans can be a challenging place to navigate for people who are unfamiliar with the streets and neighborhoods. Be careful where you walk and avoid streets that you do not know are safe. Neighborhoods in New Orleans can change quickly so please be aware of where you are and where you are going. Most of our guests are staying in the area around Lafayette Square in the Central Business District. It’s okay to walk from there to the French Quarter but it’s recommended that you take Camp St, Constance St, or Magazine St so that you can cross over Canal St at Decatur St. The closer you are to the river, the better the route. Avoid crossing Canal St at Bourbon St or going anywhere near the first three blocks of Bourbon St. This is a notoriously high crime area. If in doubt, take a cab or an Uber which are both plentiful downtown. Once in the French Quarter, Royal St and Charters St are our favorite streets to walk down. Most of the art galleries are on Royal St. Bourbon St is crowded and rowdy but if you want to check it out, start at Toulouse St and walk down, away from Canal until you get to Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop. Uber or take a cab back.
For welcome drinks: Cocktail attire. For the wedding: Black-tie optional. Dress to impress! For the crawfish boil: Casual. In general, April in New Orleans is warm, though potentially rainy. Check the weather prior to arrival and please pack accordingly. Special note to the ladies: New Orleans can be hell on heels; elevate at your own risk! Also, cross-body purses that zip or are otherwise well-secured are preferable to clutches or open totes.
With a few exceptions (Dori's, Galatoire's, and GW Finns), restaurants in the French Quarter are lackluster when compared to the rest of the city. Avoid them when possible, especially the ones on Bourbon St.
