The Story of Katie & Ty

As told by the groom

Our story starts with Katie living in Denver, and Ty in State College. Ty was working for the Penn State Alumni Association then, while Katie was hiking, skiing, and raising Maple in Denver. Penn State football wasn't supposed to make the Rose Bowl that year, but with Michigan beating Ohio State and Ohio State sneaking into the College Football Playoff, the Nittany Lions found themselves headed to California. Now, all of you know that Ty and Katie are Penn Staters. Ty's dad, Rob, has been a Penn State football fan for as long as we can remember, and Katie's mom, Kelly, is a Penn Stater, along with her brother Ryan. Penn State has been a huge part of our lives, and with the football team making the Rose Bowl, our love story was about to begin. Ty reached out to Todd and Kelly about whether they planned on going to the Rose Bowl and, if they were, invite them to the Alumni Association pep rally. Ty admits he knew they had a beautiful daughter before he sent the invite, and Katie later admitted she had heard the legend of Ty Cole before the Los Angeles weekend. With the help of Kelly, Casey Moore, our officiant, and Matt Eichelberger, one of Ty's best friends, Katie and Ty met briefly at the pep rally. We'll save the rest of that day for Casey to tell and move on to the next day. Katie and Ty met up at the same tailgate before the football game and started talking there. Throughout the tailgate and game, our Penn State crew saw our chemistry and began making moves to make sure we would connect again. Once the game ended, Ty knew he had to return to that same tailgate where Katie would hopefully be. In the rain, Ty and Matt marched back to the tailgate, and there was Katie. We talked for ten minutes while everyone around us was gushing over our love connection, and Ty asked for Katie's number so we could meet up later that night for drinks. We both left the tailgate with smiles on our faces, and Katie went to dinner with her family. Ty and Matt wandered around Pasadena, looking for an Uber to return to LA. Once they finally made it, we had our first official date over espresso martinis and talked about our lives for the next six hours. We knew something special was there and didn't want the night to end. Katie flew back to Denver the next morning, and Ty and Matt stayed in Long Beach, California, for a couple of days. Ty was absolutely starstruck (ask Matt, he'll tell you) and called Katie to see if she'd be okay with him flying to Denver from California to see her before he went back to State College. She agreed, and the next thing you know, our lovely couple is back together. After an amazing two days together, the night before Ty left, he asked Katie to be his girlfriend, and the rest was history. Or as they say... True love! Building our relationship from State College to Denver wasn't easy, but we're proud of everything we've accomplished to make it work. We explored Colorado, which has a special place in Katie's heart, and we didn't go for a full three weeks without seeing each other. Our dedication to our relationship made the long distance worth it, and now we're in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with our pets, Maple and Chuck!
