Mayberry? That's right, the town you will be staying in is where the Andy Griffith show was originally filmed. During your stay you can visit the Andy Griffith Museum, see Andy's house, tour the town in Barney's squad car, refill at Wally's, eat at Aunt Beas BBQ, and indulge at Opie's candy shop.
Pilot Mountain a terrific lookout and a couple awesome hikes. If you have no interest in hiking, that's fine! They have a parking lot at the top of the mountain that you can look out over the hills. The best part about the lookout is watching dozens of birds of pray swooping down while they hunt. They had a diagram with all the different types of birds you could see and we saw 5 species in the air at the same time.
Wild Ponies! If you or the kiddos love ponies, this recommendation is for you. Grayson Highlands State Park is a hidden gem! About 90 minutes from Mount Airy, Grayson Highlands was one of Trina and I's favorite places to visit. Bring a picnic because there's very little cell service and the restaurants are spread out in that area. We downloaded our map to be safe. The main Pony trail is Massie Gap to Wilburn Rudge Loop where you'll find into dozens of wild ponies grazing along the trail about a mile in with some moderate include. There's fantastic overlooks along the trail and we would give this hike a mild/moderate rating. This one was my favorite. If you want a shorter hike(1.3 miles) that's all incline up, Twin Pinnacle trail leads you will the BEST lookout in the park. We would rate this as a moderate hike. This was Trina's favorite.
An 1890s mercantile building renovated into a Winery, Brewery, and Restaurant with FANTASTIC food and they do wine tastings & tours!
