We met when we worked at Panera Bread in high school. My first memory of Kyle was him putting sticky notes on every register reminding his coworkers that his birthday was coming up. I was smitten when he continued to hang out with me after my mom called me on one of our dates and yelled at me about curfew. I would pickup Starbucks drinks for the two of us when we opened together on Sunday mornings. Things became official when Kyle was dropping me off after the Sadie Hawkins Dance and asked me to be his girlfriend.
The day after Christmas of 2020, we had arranged a night of cards between the Tokarski and Wagner clan. Playing card games has quite a history with the Tokarski family. Although the usual game was rummy, Kyle decided this night to teach everyone how to play poker instead. The cards he used appeared to be a deck we had gotten as a party favor from prom, but were actually replicas Kyle had printed for this occasion. Although it should have been obvious that Kyle was checking the cards he was laying down, I was a few drinks in and none the wiser, and as he flipped the cards for me to make my bet, they spelled out "Will You Marry Me?" There, surrounded by family, we got engaged!
