Ten+ Years in the Making

From Friends to Fiance

We met freshman year at UConn in 2010 when Rachael visited campus. We were seeing other people at the time but quickly became friends. Upon Rachael transferring to UConn during our sophomore, year our friendship grew stronger. After a fun and crazy senior year with our friends, we decided to officially date. We've always been a team while living an hour apart for 4 years, navigating working odd retail hours, and completing a masters degree. We stayed by each other's sides through thick and thin. In May 2018, we decided to take an adventure and move to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We moved out of our parent's homes (thank you for letting us crash for so long), moved to a new city, moved in together for the first time and both started new jobs. Calling this a big transition is putting it lightly. Once again, we conquered any challenges that we faced as a team. In March 2019 we added to our family by adopting an 8 week old Australian Shepard mix, Bailey. She completed our little family in Baton Rouge. In February 2021, we packed our apartment in Baton Rouge and moved to a townhome in Cary, NC. We've loved our time in North Carolina and are happy to call it home. We are so excited to take this next chapter in our lives in April 2022 and become Mr. and Mrs. Gruber!

Popping the Question

02/08/2020

Years ago, Rachael posted a picture on Instagram of the breakfast in bed that Rachael made for Garrett. Everyone thought that Garrett had made me breakfast and commented on how sweet it was of him. This began an ongoing joke that he got credit for his own breakfast in bed. Years later, one Saturday morning Garrett woke Rachael up very early. He came into our bedroom with a plate in his hand with an upside-down bowl on top to keep the food warm. Rach thought to herself, how sweet of Garrett to *finally* make me breakfast in bed! Bailey had jumped up onto our bed and I noticed there was something hanging from her collar. Garrett came over to Rach's side of the bed and said, “I finally made you breakfast in bed” and handed her the plate. As she took the plate, she saw him get down on one knee and immediately looked at what was hanging from Bailey’s collar. It was a sign that said, “Be my fur-ever mom?”. She lifted the bowl off the plate and found a diamond ring underneath. Tears sprung to her eyes as Garrett asked me to marry him. She said yes! She also said yes to Bailey. They celebrated with an actual breakfast that he made for them to enjoy in bed with mimosas. It was a Saturday they will never forget. Also, all this happened before 7:00 am.
