The U.S. dollar is widely accepted in Costa Rica. Recommend that you bring cash and that you do NOT exchange your U.S. dollars for the local currency “Colones” before arriving in Costa Rica. You can easily exchange your U.S. dollars in Costa Rica at a fair rate in most hotels or the local bank. *Also most credit cards do not have a foreign transaction fee.

The water in Costa Rica is safe, however, sensitive stomachs can be affected. To be on the safe side, drink bottled water and save the tap water for brushing your teeth, showering etc.
There is no malaria in Costa Rica. However, you will want to wear bug spray at times. As for Zika, it is the same amount of worry that you would have in the states. Costa Rica is nine degrees from the equator and the sun is very strong. Wear sunscreen everyday, all day! *Wear Ocean/Reef Safe sunscreen if going into the ocean! It is not only better for our oceans and the creatures that live in them but is also better for you! *Some good decently priced brands are that are super easy to find: 1. Alba Botanica 2. Babyganics 3. Badger 4. Goddess Garden When eating out, a 10% tip is commonly added onto the final bill, as well as the tax. It is recommended to add 5-8% onto the final bill, for a total of 18%.
Tamarindo is a small town but there are golf carts you can rent to easily get around other than walking.
There are lots of restaurants in Tamarindo and there are markets, a grocery store, and liquor stores in town if you decide you want to stay at a condo or house instead of an all-inclusive.
You will have to pay a $29 exit tax. To avoid long lines at the bank in the airport, you can pay this tax at the local bank a few days in advance. *It is also important to arrive at the airport 2.5-3 hours before your departure time.
