Site of William McKinley's Assasination

17 Fordham Drive, Buffalo, NY 14216

A fan of history? In 1901, Buffalo hosted the World's Fair at the western edge of Delaware Park, including Hoyt Lake (where the welcome drinks are) and the area to the north. On September 6, 1901 President William McKinley was attending the fair and was shot by Leon Czolgosz. McKinley was operated on to remove the bullet, which was successful, then sent to the Milburn House, where he seemed to be recovering. Ultimately, the wound got infected and he died on September 14th 1901. The location of the Milburn House is now Canisius High School, and there is a plaque in front of the school commemorating the site. After McKinley's passing, Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as President as the Ansley Wilcox House, which is located across the street from the Residence Inn on Delaware Ave.

More History? Take a Tour of Forest Lawn Cemetery

1990 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14208

More than just a cemetery, Forest Lawn was created in the image of Père-Lachais, the world’s most famous cemetery, established in Paris in 1804. Père-Lachais balanced nature and art, allowing civilization to be present without disturbing the grandeur of the romantic setting, and Forest Lawn does the same. Forest Lawn Cemetery is a historic landmark renowned for its stunning landscape architecture and significant monuments. It also has a number of famous residents, including Millard Fillmore (13th President of the United States), Rick James (Grammy Award winner and Buffalo native), Shirley Chisolm (First African American woman elected to Congress), and Willis Haviland Carrier (father of modern air conditioning.)
