Shirley and Will’s story began in the summer of 2016 at a bowling alley. Shirley had tagged along with a friend to a YMCA worker event, unaware that this ordinary night would change everything. Across the lanes, she and Will caught each other’s eyes—but neither of them said a word. A few days later, Will was still thinking about her. He asked their mutual friend for Shirley’s number, making sure she was okay with it. Not long after, his message popped up on her phone, and they set up their first date. They watched a movie, then shared Cold Stone ice cream afterward, a simple but sweet start to something bigger. That summer was filled with dates and late-night conversations, but they both knew time was running short. Will would soon head back to Greensboro for school and soccer, but distance didn’t seem so daunting since Burlington was right down the road. They weren’t ready to say goodbye. On October 6th, Will officially asked Shirley to be his girlfriend, and from that day forward, they were inseparable. Together, they explored new places—from the beaches of the Dominican Republic to Shirley’s family’s hometown in Tampico, Mexico. And in London, against the backdrop of one of the world’s most romantic cities, Will asked her to be his wife.
