Shina and Andrew met each other at the Peckish Pig, a restaurant/brewery on the boarder of Chicago and Evanston to partake in one of his favorite activities, BRUNCH!* They immediately connected over their shared cultures, experiences visiting Cuba, and shared love of the theatre as they had both recently seen Hamilton in Chicago during the same week in January. *Andrew would later sadly learn that while Shina likes to brunch, she does not enjoy having breakfast food :-O
One of Andrew's favorite things about Shina is her intelligence and passion for education. What he'll never understand, however, is her affiliation with a concerning number of Big Ten Conference schools that rival his beloved alma mater, the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). When they met, Shina had obtained her Master's degree at Ohio State and was finishing up her PhD at Northwestern, and because that wasn't enough, Andrew soon learned from Shina that she had earned the opportunity to become an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University starting in summer 2018. In what must be described as an act of true love, Andrew decided to move with Shina to Lansing, Michigan, in order to start a new chapter of their lives!
Shina informed Andrew early on in their relationship that the 2022 site for her main professional conference (ICA) was going to be held in Paris, France. Andrew almost couldn't believe this news as he had always wanted to travel to Paris and now he would be able to share the experience with his love! Throughout the years, Andrew joked that it was one of the main reasons they were together, but that was put to the test when COVID canceled 2020 ICA in Australia and put ICA Paris in doubt. As the ICA Paris date approached and was proceeding as planned, Andrew knew that proposing in Paris would be a romantic dream come true. In what would turn out to be a fortuitous decision, Andrew asked Shina to marry him on the very first day they arrived while dining on a rooftop overlooking the Eiffel Tower. After Shina said yes, the two enjoyed a most necessary jet-lagged nap, wined and dined on the River Seine, and the next day had a photographer capture their Paris proposal memories.
