How We Met

The Porch

Jacquelyn: The first time I saw Shane was at a young adult ministry called The Porch. It was one of my first times there, having just moved back to the area a few weeks before. A group was tossing a frisbee outside before the message and I decided to join in. Someone tossed me the frisbee, and I looked around the circle to figure out who to toss the disc to when I made eye contact with Shane and thought, “he’s cute. I'll toss the frisbee to him.” Instead of tossing the disc directly at him, like I was trying to. I proceeded to toss it completely sideways to no one and Shane went to get the disc. Then I decided to step out of the game to not further embarrass myself. Fast forward a few days, some people from The Porch were meeting up for a run (a sport that is definitely more my speed :) ) at the Loveland bike path. I was running a little bit late that day and had to run to catch the group. When I caught them, I was excited to see that the guy from earlier in the week (which I would soon know to be Shane) was also there. Shane: I was on a Saturday morning run with some of my Porch friends, when out of no where came this random girl who said, "Hey guys!" I look at who it is and think to myself, "Who is this person? She's pretty stinkin' cute though." Then I proceed to say something ridiculous, "Hello person who I do not know." (I know, very smooth) We went on a 5 mile run that day which was great because I was just firing off questions left and right trying to get to know her more. After the run we invited her to a movie night that night. Jacquelyn: Leaving the run, I definitely wanted to get to know Shane more and, thankfully, I ended up getting to do that at the movie night that evening. When Shane and I talk about that first day we met we both remember that as we each drove home that night after the movie, we had a crush on one another. Shane: I was crushin' real hard on her. :-)

The Day We Knew Something Was Different

Running in the Rain

Shane: Friday as I'm leaving work I was talking to one of my coworkers who says, "Man, it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow." "Noooooo!" I yell. Taken back by my passionate no, he asks, "What's up?" I tell him how excited I was to hang out with this girl on another friend run the next day. I immediately text the run group and say, "Who wants to run in the rain with me tomorrow?" hoping that somehow word gets to Jacquelyn (yes, she's the "girl" I was referring to). I get no takers except my roommate Aaron. At this point I'm feeling very bummed because I just don't think the run is going to happen. Fast forward to Saturday, and I am hanging out with Aaron feeling sad and watching The Masters. When Aaron says, "Jacquelyn just texted us about running." "What? No way, stop messing with me," I rebuttal. "No really, check your phone." I check and am elated to find out it was true! So we get it set up for 4:00 P.M. after she gets off work. Jacquelyn: possible Karen. I meet up with Shane and Aaron after I get off work at a park with a little running loop (very excited to see Shane). The guys apparently had just eaten some heavy Indian food so I was a little concerned for their well-being. I was right to be concerned, our friend Aaron decided to call it a run less than a mile into it leaving Shane and I to run with one another. This was a turning point; something was different about this day and our conversation. I had chills, and not from the rain. We shared testimonies and talked about family and I could tell the Holy Spirit was working in that rainy run that day. I could tell that this friendship was different. Shane: Thanks for dropping out of the run and being a good wing man, Aaron, and sticking around in your car for 45 + minutes. :-) Jacquelyn: Yes! Thank you!

First Date

Fireworks

There are just some details from our first date that we would like you to know before we tell our last story. There were fireworks, literal and figuratively speaking. We had had dinner (and ice cream :) ) across the river in Newport, KY and had drove back across the river to enjoy a walk in Smale Park in downtown cincy right along the Ohio River and right next to the Reds stadium (hence the literal fireworks). It was a wonderful night filled with getting to know one another with more intentional conversation, sliding down a very large metal slide in the park and holding hands for the first time. Fun Fact: Shane backed into a lady's car in the Kroger parking lot after picking up flowers for Jacquelyn. Great way to start a date eh??

The Engagement

12.22.21

Jacquelyn: The night before we went on an unplanned double date with our friends Lauren and Lane. Lane proceeds to ask Lauren about what kind of rings she likes since they were going ring shopping the next day. We were at B-Dubs on Tuesday and they were doing BOGO wings. Lane then says, "Shane, we should do a BOGO with the rings together!" Shane then says, “Yes! What type of ring do you like again?” I left there that night thinking that he hadn’t even thought about getting the ring yet. Shane: Pumped for the day to come, I was definitely a little distracted and not super focused during work. All my coworkers were super excited for me though, which was really sweet. I got to leave work early to pick up Jacquelyn for the big evening planned. Super nervous on the drive there, I was praying and doing some deep breathing. I get to Jacquelyn's and notice she has some eye shadow on, so I ask, "You have eye shadow on?" I immediately thought, "She knows, but how in the world does she know!?" She responds with, "Oh, I just felt like adding some color today." ...... I shook it off and just proceeded as if nothing was wrong or different. I was taking her downtown to where we had our first date together. We get there and start walking the walk we had previously done. We go down the big slide we went down on our first date holding hands again and it was super sweet. I'm keeping pretty calm I think as we're approaching the big steps where I'm going to propose. We walk down the steps and then I hop up on the bottom step and ask for hand just like the first date where we first held hands. We proceed to walk along the step to where the marker for where I'm supposed to stand is. I'm waiting for the plan to take place, but it's taking longer than I thought. The longest 60 seconds of my life! Jacquelyn: Suddenly, fireworks start going off. I think to myself, "wow, this would have been the perfect time for him to propose if he had the ring." When the fireworks stop going off, Shane looks at me a says, "I love you so much." The gets down on one knee and asks me to be his teammate forever and to marry him. I say, "Yes, yes forever."
