Neither Christine or Scott imagined they would find the love of their life on a dating app, but clearly Coffee Meets Bagel had other plans! After matching on the app, the two hit it off discussing their prior travels to Kauai and the realization that they were both from the 805. While chatting about surfing, Scott revealed that he was recovering from ACL surgery, but showed optimism despite being stuck with crutches for a few more weeks. Christine commented how positive his attitude was about the recovery, upon which Scott exclaimed he would have an even better outlook if she agreed to go on a date with him after recovering. While quite the cheesy line, Christine agreed to help "improve his outlook" and locked in plans to go to Hermosa for drinks a few weeks later. When the day finally arrived, they met at Hennessey's for beers and spoke for hours about playing water polo in high school, attending Stagecoach in 2016, and Christine having never drank any alcoholic "bombs". It would be a few weeks before their second date (Christine went to Hawaii with her family), in which they got ice cream and walked from Hermosa to Manhattan pier and back. As they walked past American Junkie, Christine commented how she often went line dancing with her friends...which Scott used as an opportunity to lock in a third date. While Christine and Scott didn't know most of the obscure line dances, they had a great time drinking a few beers and learning a few dances. After an awesome night together, they shared their first kiss. Christine and Scott continued to go on dates and their relationship grew into the solid foundation it is today.
After spending a casual New Year's Eve together to wrap up 2020, Scott and Christine decided to spend New Year's Day going for a walk on the Redondo Beach bike path as they had done the year before. Christine changed into her workout clothes, but Scott reassured her that it would be a nice calm walk and that wearing jeans was more appropriate (Christine probably should have been more suspicious of the subtle outfit recommendation). When they eventually reached the end of the path, Scott exclaimed how they should take a selfie in the exact spot they had the previous year. Scott then proceeded into a heartfelt monologue about how 2020, while being an extremely challenging year between work insanity, UC relapse, and COVID quarantine, should have been one of the worst years of his life, but was instead yet another amazing year because of Christine being such an amazing and supportive partner. Scott then got on one knee, pulled out a ring, and asked Christine if she would marry him. And of course she said YES! Scott then promised to never keep another secret from Christine, as he proceeded to reveal how he sneakily purchased the ring, asked her parents permission, planned an engagement celebration with our parents, and hired a friend to take pictures of us from up on the bluff. We called our friends and family on the walk back, ecstatic to start (and eventually celebrate) the next chapter of our lives together!
