Our Story

A Tale of Lake-crossed Lovers on the High Seas of Monticello

It was the Summer of 2012 in Monticello, Indiana — a time and place that neither Jack nor Sawyer had ever expected to meet. On a complete whim, Sawyer decided to accompany one of her best friends, Lilly Bindley, on a last-minute trip to her family lake house. Having recently transferred colleges, Jack had just arrived in Monticello to begin summer classes at Purdue University. The right constellation of fate and chance was unfurling, but nothing was guaranteed. Long before all that, Sawyer and Jack had actually been orbiting each other for most of their lives. Sawyer had been friends with Jack’s cousin, Lilly since kindergarten, and Jack had spent most of his summers in Indiana. But never before had they met — ships passing in the Indiana night. Now, under the Monticello sun, Sawyer stood, hands akimbo, on the hillside of the Vaughan family lake house. Much to her dismay, the dock at the base of the sloping hill was devoid of anything resembling a speed boat. Then came the full throttle rip of an outboard engine churning lake water to froth. As if on cue, the boat that the girls so desired had appeared, only it seemed to have been commandeered by pirates. Easing the throttle, Jack elbowed his cousin, “who the hell is that!?” and nodded in the direction of the beautiful blonde stranger on the hill. He cut the wheel and angled for the dock. Electricity is known to travel via all manners of conduits, but rarely is it known to arc from one chest to another. This is what it felt like as Jack took Sawyer’s hand and helped her aboard. Call it chemistry. Call it destiny. Call it hormones (there were plenty). A feeling had emerged in the space between these two strangers, and it was a feeling that made it clear they would be strangers no more. However, after that magical summer, Sawyer and Jack lost touch. Sawyer returned to Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia and Jack remained in Indiana, a Boilermaker. With several states between them, the days of lost communication stretched into years until they “re-met” one another in New York City in the winter of 2016. And the two of them picked up exactly where they had left off. They quickly began dating and moved into their first apartment together in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. There was endless pizza, phenomenal friends, the oddest of odd jobs, and epic nights of dancing at The Black Flamingo. Eventually, a year had passed in NYC, and Sawyer and Jack turned to each other and said “New York, I love you, but you’re bringing us down.” So they hit the road and moved to Santa Monica where they happily live today with their wild tornado piglet of a pup, Ringo (aka Ringo Starr Prince Caspian Vaughan Greenberg). It all became official when Jack proposed on December 16th of 2022. What started out as a decoy “holiday card photo shoot” quickly turned into Jack down on one knee. And the rest is history. Over the past six years, Sawyer and Jack have built a beautiful life together, championing one another through cosmic curveballs and career catapults alike. Belly laughs have been a constant companion, as well as the best friends and family two people could ever ask for. But enough about us. If you are reading this, it’s more than likely that you are one of the many people in our lives who we care about deeply. So, we’d like to take this moment and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love means the world to us and we wouldn’t be the people we are today without you. Now, get those dancing shoes ready and we’ll see you in June!
