We recommend checking your passport to make sure that the expiration date is more than 6 months after the wedding (so, expiring after August 12 2022). If your passport will expire before this date, you may consider starting the renewal process now (we have heard there are delays) Consider applying for Global Entry which will speed up the customs process when you arrive back to the US
Mexico does not require proof of a negative COVID test in order to fly into the country. The US requires proof of a negative test (regardless of vaccination status) to be completed no more than 24 hours before your flight departs for the US. Your airline will request to see the paper or electronic copy of the test at the airport before you get your boarding pass. Most airlines also use a mobile app which makes it easy to upload your test results prior to heading to the airport and get pre-approval that the test is valid. The test can be either a PCR or antigen (rapid) test. The CDC accepts 3 at-home tests for inbound passengers - the Abbot BinaxNOW Home Test, the Ellume Home Test, and the Qured video-supervised rapid antigen test. We suggest ordering one of these tests online and bringing with you to Mexico, as each test can be taken from wherever you are, as long as you can access the internet to have your test proctured by telehealth. You can use your cell phone for the telehealth services and do not need to bring a computer. When you are within the 24-hour window, you can take the at-home test and then will receive a PDF of your results via email.
Here are a few places to buy the Abbott BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card Home Test with eMED. Note this test is different from the BinaxNOW test commonly told at CVS or other pharmacies. The ones sold at retail locations does not include the eMED component. - 2-pack: https://store.optum.com/shop/products/abbott-binaxNOW-COVID-19-ag-at-home-test-kit-2-pack/ - 3-pack: https://store.optum.com/shop/products/abbott-binaxNOW-COVID-19-ag-at-home-test-kit-3-pack/ - 6-pack: https://www.emed.com/products/covid-at-home-testkit-six-pack Here are places to buy the Ellume home test. Many hotels will help to organize testing, and will provide a list of nearby pharmacies where you can obtain a test. You could also walk into a local pharmacy or lab to obtain a rapid test. We have done this twice in San Miguel. The test costs $50 USD and results are delivered to your email via PDF in ~ 1 hour. Testing is available at the QRO, BJX, and CDMX airports. You can reserve a testing appointment in advance and results should be available within 15 minutes.
The two closest airports are Guanajuato International Airport (BJX - 1.5 hrs away) and Querétaro Intercontinental Airport (QRO - 1 hr 15 mins away). A third option is to fly into Mexico City (MEX), which is 3.5 hours away.
We recommend reserving a driving service to take you from the airport to San Miguel. These services only need a few days’ notice and have availability for all size vehicles. You can pay in cash or credit card (they take USD or Mexican pesos). 1. Miguel’s Driving Service - reach out via WhatsApp (+52 415 153 4084) to coordinate your airport pick up. Please mention you are with Philip and Chelsea's wedding. One way from BJX or QRO typically costs $80 and starts at $200 from Mexico City. The driver will greet you at the airport exit with a sign with your name. 2. Other shuttle companies - Bajio Go (https://www.bajiogo.com/) and Viajes San Miguel (https://www.viajessanmiguel.com/serviciosENG.php).
UBER: You can take an Uber from the airport to San Miguel for approximately $40 USD. To get back to the airport, you can still take an Uber but there is less supply in San Miguel. If you have Verizon, your service is extended to San Miguel for no charge so you can use your cell data to call an uber. Otherwise, you can connect to the airport wifi. TAXIS: There are taxis available at the airports, but they are better equipped for short distances so we do not recommend this option for getting to/from San Miguel. There are many taxis that you can take to get around the city of San Miguel. Most taxis cost less than $5 USD (100 MXN). It's fairly easy to catch a taxi on the street.
We suggest having cash on hand for taxis around the city, tips at the hotel, or for buying gifts from markets around the city. All restaurants and larger stores accept credit cards.
No - most hotels in San Miguel will have American chargers, so you do not need to bring a converter.
