How We Met

A Small Farm off the Coast of Maine

Many of you are familiar with a place called Roque Island. It is an island just off the coast in Downeast Maine that has been in Heather's family for generations. There are very few places in the world like it and anyone lucky enough to have spent time there will tell you how truly special it is. For Heather and Ethan, it's also the place that brought them together. Heather grew up spending her summers on Roque exploring the forests, beaches and farm. She would play in the old barns, help collect the eggs, and groom the horses every chance she could. So when she grew up and had the chance to work on the farm one summer, she jumped at the opportunity. Ethan had been working as a carpenter in New York City and decided to spend a summer learning about farming and agriculture. He reached out to half a dozen farms around the state of Maine and planned to spend several weeks at each working in exchange for room and board. The first stop on his journey was Roque Island. Heather and Ethan first met that summer. Thrown together with a group of amazing and knowledgable people, it was an amazing few weeks spent learning and working together. When Ethan’s two weeks were up, he was offered a job on the farm and ultimately lived and worked there for a total of three years. Heather returned to the Island periodically for trips with her friends and family. Over time the two began to fall for each other. After a year of speaking daily from across the country they decided to take a giant leap. Ethan put in his notice, packed up a U-Haul and set out for Chicago! Five years later Heather and Ethan have built a beautiful life with each other. These days they return to the island together. A place made even more special by the part it has played in their own story.
