Kyle and I met in Scottsdale, Arizona while we were both working at Yelp. Kyle had moved to Phoenix in November of 2013 from Omaha to start a position at Yelp. He was searching for a new post-graduate adventure. I moved to Scottsdale from Raleigh in January of 2016 pursuing the same thing. Kyle and I were placed on the same team under the leadership of our beloved manager Kendra. He and I didn't interact much the first couple of months until we attended an event outside of work for our team to get to know each other in late May. It was there that we discovered that we had both studied abroad in Madrid, Spain while we were in college. From there our friendship began to grow. Our platonic friendship didn't last very long as Kyle is far too kind, handsome, and special to not completely fall in love with. When my car started having problems in June, Kyle was eager to help me search for a new one. He gave me rides and accompanied me to car shop on a couple of different occasions. During this time together outside of work we got to know each other well. We had a lot in common, but it was the things we didn't have in common that most fascinated me. He is calm, gentle, task and detail oriented while I am spontaneous, loud, and kind of a mess when it comes to organization. He tended to talk about facts while I tended to talk about how I feel about certain facts. He's my perfect match. On July 14, 2016 at a car dealership in Scottsdale, Arizona, I landed a beautiful 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and a 1991 Nebraska-bred boyfriend.
I'd been going back & forth on how to propose to Molly for a long time. I had had the engagement ring since April. I had everything checked off the list. I had spoken to her father, which was one of the most validating & motivational moments in my life. I had the ring. Now I needed the perfect time & setting. Molly had not met my sister yet but had met everyone else in my immediate family. It was important for me to have her meet my sister, so it was a natural decision to wait until our trip to Omaha, NE at the end of July & then I could pop the question. I wanted it to be perfect for Molly. In my mind, I knew the following were crucial in making it a memorable moment: an intimate location, a professional photographer to document the moment, a sense of surprise, free time afterward for her to call friends & family, & most important--incorporating our faith in a personal, meaningful, & central way. The Chapel of the Holy Cross matched all the criteria. The day came & I tried to make sure every detail was perfect. My mom helped with redirecting any of Molly's suspicions in order to keep it a surprise. Molly will tell you I was acting weird & she pieced it together before we got to the chapel, she may be right. I had never been so nervous. The one thing I didn't plan for was having time in case Molly wanted McDonalds on the way to the surprise proposal...I should have known she'd want McDonalds. I had spent 2 months memorizing 1 Corinthians 13 & I still managed to stumble over words when looking into her eyes. I couldn't believe it was happening. I got on one knee after reciting the passage & asked Molly to marry me. All other questions in life I will happily give up to God, but this one I needed an answer from her. I wanted to marry Molly very early in our relationship. I needed to accomplish personal goals in order to feel confident about earning the right to ask for her hand. All my hard work had paid off. The setting was perfect. It was the best day of my life.
