Dane and McKenna were chosen for one another... Not by fate or divine intervention but by their friends Brooke and Alex Merrick. On June 5th in 2020, the two invited Dane and McKenna over with the promise of board games and pizza. Neither Dane nor McKenna had high hopes for their meeting, but, despite McKenna's frustration with dating woes and Dane's nervousness at the thought of making small talk, they both showed up ready for Catchphrase and Domino's. The hopeful glances of Brooke and Alex and awkward exchanges between Dane and McKenna punctuated each player's turn until the evening started to lull and come to an end. As Dane headed to his car, McKenna lingered on the porch. Whether it was intuition or the weight Brooke and Alex's stares through the blinds, McKenna called out to Dane, suggesting they grab some ice cream together before heading home. Dane hid his eagerness well as they set off for Lake Conroe's Marble Slab. Ice cream in hand (salted caramel for Dane, cinnamon vanilla for McKenna) they meandered down to the docks where they settled naturally into their first meaningful conversations of the night. They talked for hours, legs swinging over the water, until the storefronts around them emptied and dimmed. Neither would have guessed that afternoon that they'd be sitting side by side on a dock, hand stickied from sugar and faces slick with heat with the person they were meant to be with.
